Why choose a plavalmat® Place Value Mat?

Durable

Firstly, the hard-wearing natural rubber results in a very robust maths mat.  Moreover a thermal laminate layer has been heat sealed to the surface so it will withstand regular use in classrooms and home learning environments.

Practical, hands on learning

Secondly, in comparison with black and white printed or photocopied resources, a plavalmat® has a bright, colourful and engaging design.  The colour coding matches the White Rose Maths however plavalmat® resources are suitable for use with all schemes of learning.

Versatile design for use with maths resources

Thirdly, in comparison with other place value charts, a plavalmat® has column headings with whole numbers and decimals.  However the most notable benefit is that the unique design has fractions with equivalent percentages, but also include units of measure and money.  For this reason, children will be able to use a plavalmat® to help them in many more maths topics than comparable place value charts.

Furthermore, as concrete maths manipulatives are an essential part of the maths mastery curriculum, it is vital that a pupils use a plavalmat® alongside a wide range of maths manipulatives commonly used in schools.  Consequently the design has integrated ten frames so it can be used with two sided or double sided counters, maths cubes and number frames.  In particular, plavalmat® place value counters work especially well with these colour matched place value charts.

Base Ten Mat

Above all, many educators know how difficult and time consuming it is to fit all the required place value columns on to one sheet A4 or A3 paper or card.  Due to this a further benefit is that the Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones / Units columns are wide enough for a plavalmat® to use as a base ten mat.  Therefore although the mat is longer than traditional charts it is more flexible and can be rolled up and stored for future use.

Care Instructions

plavalmat® place value mats can be kept clean and hygienic by wiping with a damp cloth and mild detergent then dried immediately.

Although it is difficult to rip or tear these maths mats, they can be cut so care should be taken to avoid contact with scissors and other sharp objects.

A plavalmat® should be rolled print side facing outwards and stored inside its cardboard tube.

It is recommended to use white Crayola Anti-Dust chalk sticks with our place value mats. Other chalk sticks and dry-wipe chalk pens should be tested first in an inconspicuous area before use as not all chalk products available are suitable for dry-wipe applications. Sharp edges of chalk sticks should be rounded off before use.

In order to use dry-wipe marker pens, it is advised to place a sheet of acetate or plastic walle on top of the plavalmat® and write on these rather than directly on the mat itself. As the quality of dry-wipe pens vary, some can be hard to remove and may leave permanent marks.

These maths mats have not been tested to food safety standards, but if required an acetate cake collar can be placed on top before use.
