Algebra and Directed Number Interlocking Zero Pair Counters (DOTS+TODS™)

red positive 1 and yellow negative 1 directed number and algebra disks representation of zero pairs
DOTS+TODS™ (Set of 100 red and yellow interlocking algebra counters)

This boxed set contains the following:

  • Set of 100 pieces in plastic compartment box to keep organised
  • 50 x Yellow DOTS to represent the value of positive one (+1)
  • 50 x Red TODS to represent the value of negative one (-1)
  • Interlocking design – DOTS+TODS fit together to make a clear representation of a zero pair in maths
  • Use to teach addition and subtraction, multiplication and division of positive and negative numbers
  • Can also be used to solve basic algebraic equations
  • Teacher designed alternative to traditional algebra tiles, two colour or double sided counters
  • Thickness and size makes the DOTS+TODS easy to grasp and use
  • Made from durable and long lasting plastic

DOTS+TODS are particularly beneficial for use with our POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBER LINE -50 +50 as together they develop a deeper concrete understanding of adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers (directed numbers and zero pairs).

What are Dots + Tods™ Algebra and Directed Number Zero Pair Counters?

Dots+Tods™ counters are Oakfield Learning’s teacher designed alternative to maths manipulatives such as double sided or two-colour counters and algebra tiles. They help pupils ages 9+ to develop a deeper understanding of the basic concepts of algebra, especially the concepts of zero pairs.  Furthermore they will support understaning of rules involved in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing directed (positive and negative) numbers.

Our set of interlocking DOTS+TODS™ contains 50 x DOT counters (representing a positive one) and 50 x TOD counters (representing a negative one) that together make a clear representation of a zero pair.  Choose between two different colour options (white DOTS with black TODS or Yellow DOTS with red TODS) which come in a plastic compartment storage box to keep them organised. DOTS+TODS™ directed number/algebra counters are are made from durable, thick plastic so they are easy to grasp, durable and simple to use.

How can our DOTS+TODS™ interlocking algebra counters help children master understanding of zero pairs and directed numbers in maths?

Pupils are first introduced to positive and negative integers in KS2 in Year 4 when they are aged 8-9.  They first learn to count back through zero using negative numbers.  This is done mainly through the context of temperature using thermometers, vertical and horizontal number lines. At this age, DOTS+TODS™ could be used, however they are mainly intended for older pupils.

In the England National Curriculum states that pupils in Year 5 and 6 need to be able to interpret negative numbers in context.  Furthermore, they need to count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through zero.  Our DOTS+TODS™ counters are suitable for use at this age.  When used alongside positive and negative number lines they can help pupils develop a secure understanding.

In KS3, the National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils ‘become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and
frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately’.  In order to do this, Year 7 pupils often use algebra tiles, double sided or two colour counters as visual representations of directed numbers (positive and negative numbers) and zero pairs.  In secondary maths, our DOTS+TODS™ counters are particularly beneficial.  They can be used to explore the rules of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing directed numbers.  This can be helpful, especially for pupils who require an alternative to number lines.

Are DOTS+TODS™ a better alternative to using algebra tiles or two colour counters?

Rather than just learning rules with little conceptual understanding, our visual representations enable pupils to interact with concrete resources.  They can actually see what ‘ZERO PAIRS‘ are and why ‘A POSITIVE AND A NEGATIVE EQUALS A NEGATIVE‘ and ‘A NEGATIVE AND A NEGATIVE EQUALS A POSITIVE‘.

DOTS+TODS™ are a great alternative to algebra tiles or two colour counters to help pupils gain a deeper understanding of algebraic expressions and equations.  As the positive one and negative one counters interlock, they actually form a zero pair.
