Our base ten yellow tens rods are available in packs of 10. This is a handy pack size that is useful when additional pieces are needed, to replace missing parts or make your own custom sized set. In addition to these yellow base ten rods, we also sell the red ones cubes in packs of 100, green hundreds flats in packs of 10 and blue thousands blocks individually. Create a 121 pc set for only £13.29 (Excluding Tax) or design a custom set. We have created the perfect size base ten set that contains 100 red ones cubes, 20 yellow tens rods, 20 green hundreds flats and 1 blue thousands block all inside a strong plastic storage box. Like all our plavalmat® range, they follow the same colour-coding for easy recognition of place values. Plus as the recycled plastic in our base ten yellow tens rods is grooved and interlocking, it shows the proportionality between 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s.
Base ten yellow tens rods are an essential starting point for children learning about 2-digit numbers. We recommend pupils begin with base ten before using place value disks or counters.
Base ten (or dienes) was developed to help pupils to visualise how the base 10 number system works. First they begin by making 2-digit numbers by using base ten cubes and rods. Next they will quickly learn how 10 x Ones are equal to 1 x Ten. Then they will use Hundreds flats to make 3-digit numbers. Children will discover how 100 x Ones cubes or 10 x Tens rods are equal to 100. Finally they will be ready to move on to realising how 1000 Ones cubes, 100 Tens rods or 10 Hundreds flats are equivalent to 1000 which is represented by 1 x base ten blue thousands block.
