WHAT IS A plavalmat® MILLIONS PLACE VALUE CHART ?
plavalmat® by Oakfield Learning Ltd, is a teacher-designed, long lasting, quality yet affordable maths mat alternative to traditional card or paper Millions place value charts, worksheets and resources.
The unique Millions place value chart has fractions, decimals and percentages. Moreover is made from a flexible, lightweight and hard-wearing natural rubber to withstand regular use. It is long enough to have all the required place value columns from 0.001 to Millions but when it is no longer needed, pupils can roll it up to store away**. This feature is particularly beneficial for easy transportation.
It has a non slip and durable non-slip surface with integrated ten frames. The multifunctional design fits concrete maths manipulatives such as: Numicon, base ten*, place value disks, two colour counters, money, maths cubes, place value dice and place value cards. It is also possible to write on them with chalk**.
Each has a bright, colourful high quality printed chart featuring integrated ten frames and columns with whole Numbers from Millions to Ones. Plus decimals (tenths, hundredths and thousandths) with their fraction and percentage equivalents. An added benefit of these place value mats is the column headings also have units of metric measurement and money that are also in the column headings. Subsequently they pupils will use a plavalmat® in many more topics over the academic year, not just when learning number and place value to Millions.
We realise that not all learning takes place in classrooms or even at a desk. Therefore we have designed our multifunctional maths mat place value charts to be used on tables but they are also perfect for use during starter sessions on the carpet or floor, both indoors and outdoors. This is particularly beneficial with individuals who struggle working at a desk.
WHO CAN USE A MILLIONS PLACE VALUE CHART MATHS MAT?
The plavalmat® Millions place value chart is suitable for children ages 9+. It is perfect for pupils learning about whole numbers up to 7 digits and decimals to thousandths (0.001) plus the fraction and percentage equivalents.
This teacher designed multifunctional mat is not limited for use by children in schools, tutoring and home learning. In addition, post-16 further education and adult learning centres can support those who struggle with maths. Specialist schools and educational establishments have purchased our plavalmat® place value resources to help older pupils or those with with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). People with maths anxiety or specific learning difficulties such as dyscalculia can also benefit from using them. Using physical manipulatives is more fun and engaging for learners. As a result of actually seeing the maths by interacting with objects that represent numbers and place values, they develop a better understanding of these abstract concepts.
WHAT MATHS SCHEMES OF LEARNING CAN I USE A plavalmat® MILLIONS PLACE VALUE CHART WITH?
As over 80% of primary schools and 40% of secondary schools in the UK and over 150 countries worldwide use the White Rose Education maths scheme of learning, Oakfield Learning Ltd decided to colour match all of its plavalmat® range of place value resources to those used in White Rose Maths (WRM) pupil books, textbooks and interactive resources.
The White Rose Maths scheme follows the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA approach). This works on a principle that when pupils learn a new concept, they should firstly use concrete physical resources. Then pupils can move on to pictorial representations of these manipulatives. Finally they will be able to have a better understanding of abstract concepts when symbols and digits are used.
However, our resources are suitable for use with all maths schemes of learning, not just White Rose Education. As the colour coding across all our place value mats, place value counters, base ten and place value dice is consistent, pupils will easily recognise that in our place value resources red always represents ones and yellow always represents tens, for example.

* The column widths on the Millions > 0.001 plavalmat® are narrower than other styles. As a result, they are not wide enough for base 10 hundreds flats and thousands blocks. But, they will fit ones cubes and tens rods.
**CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
- Keep plavalmat® place value mats flat or rolled up and store inside the cardboard tube.
- The durable, flexible and non slip surface can be kept clean and hygienic. First, wipe with a damp, non-abrasive cloth with mild detergent. Then dry immediately.
- These maths mats are not suitable for washing in sinks, dishwashers or washing machines. Furthermore do not submerge in water.
- Pupils can write on a plavalmat® with wet/dry wipe chalk pens. To remove this, wipe with a damp cloth. To use anti-dust chalk sticks, remove sharp edges first to avoid scratching the surface. Please test first in an inconspicuous area first.
- It is not recommend to use dry-wipe marker pens with a plavalmat® as they may leave permanent marks. To write with dry-wipe marker pens, place a sheet of acetate on top of the maths mat.
- A plavalmat® cannot be ripped or torn. However, it is possible to cut them with a craft knife or scissors.
