Base Ten sets are an essential tool in maths to help children develop a better understanding of numbers and place value up to 4-digits (Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones – Th H T O) in a fun and practical way. Also known as dienes, they are a visual, concrete representations of numbers which can be physically manipulated to solve problems.
NEW SIZE FOR 2024! More pieces at the same great price!
plavalmat® Base Ten 141 piece set is designed for individual/pair/small group learning in school and home learning. Unlike many other sets available, our Base 10 components are made from recycled plastic and contain more tens rods and hundreds flats. Children can easily add two digit numbers that cross the hundreds boundary e.g. 70 + 60 = 130 (this would need 13 x tens rods so other small sets containing only 10 x tens rods would not be enough for exchanging and regrouping). Pupils will also be able to add three digit numbers that cross the thousands boundary e.g 800 + 900 = 1,700 (this would require 17 base ten flats – most sets available have only 10).
100 x Interlocking Red ones (1cm³ cubes*)
20 x Interlocking Yellow Tens (1cm x 1cm x 10cm rods)
20 x Interlocking Green Hundreds (1cm x 10cm x 10cm flats)
1 x Grooved Blue Thousands (10cm³ blocks)
PLUS 1 x FREE plastic storage box
plavalmat® Base Ten sets can be used with children aged 6+ to learn a wide range of maths topics:
Addition and Subtraction
Multiplication and Division
Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
Our plavalmat® Base Ten sets have been designed for use with our range of plavalmat place value charts and counters which are have consistent colour coding in-line with White Rose Maths and Power Maths Schemes of Learning. Consistent colours results in less confusion when children are using maths manipulatives e.g. when using yellow coloured cubes as ones instead of the red cubes shown in the diagrams on worksheets and textbooks.
The durable plastic last longer than foam sets (see care instructions*) and the interlocking pieces enable children to see how each value is proportional to another. This helps to develop a deeper understanding of the fundamental maths mastery concept that each place value is ten times bigger than the size of the last.
10 ones = 1 ten
10 tens = 1 hundred
10 hundreds = 1 thousand
YOU MAY ALSO BE INTERESTED IN OUR PLAVALMAT PLACE VALUE MATS WHICH ARE MORE DURABLE AND REUSABLE ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL PLACE VALUE CHARTS AS THEY ARE MADE FROM NATURAL RUBBER. THE COLUMNS ON HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO BE WIDER IN ORDER TO BE USED AS BASE TEN MATS (with the exception of our Y5/6 plavalmat as the columns are narrower).
Like our place value counters, our plavalmat® Base Ten sets are made of a durable recycled plastic so they are easy to clean.
They can be sink washed or put in a dishwasher inside a suitable bag.
