WHAT IS A PLAVALMAT®?
With over 20 years experience in primary teaching, we know how time consuming and costly it can be making resources from card or paper that need sticking together which can then only be used a few times before looking tired. These resources are often laminated and whilst these last longer, they are difficult to store as folding or rolling can damage them.
The plavalmat® is a teacher-designed, longer lasting, multi-functional and more engaging alternative to traditional place value charts, worksheets and resources. This unique place value mat is made from a flexible, lightweight and hard-wearing rubber. It can be used with numicon, base ten*, place value counters/disks, double sided counters, money, maths cubes, place value dice and place value cards.
* The column widths on our plavalmat® styles are wide enough for use with Base Ten hundreds flats and thousands blocks (with the exception of the age 9+ style where the columns are narrower).
Five different designs have been specifically tailored to meet the England Mathematics 2014 National Curriculum statutory requirements for children ages 6+:
Ages 6+ Tens and Ones columns plus a grey working area with integrated ten frames. This is beneficial for pupils who are using double sided counters to consolidate number bonds to 10 and 20 whilst learning the place value of two-digit numbers. This mat is suitable for children following the UK National Curriculum objectives for Years 2 and 3.
Ages 6 to 8 – This plavalmat® can be used with children in Year 2 who are working at a greater depth and are ready to explore three digit numbers. It can also be used in Year 3 with pupils who are still working on their number bonds, whilst other children in the class are confidently working with Hundreds, Tens and Ones. It can be used with double-sided counters, Numicon (number frames), dienes (base 10) and place value counters.
Ages 7 to 8 – Suitable for children in Year 3 who are working with numbers to 1000 and exploring three-digit numbers as this place value grid is printed with Hundreds, Tens and Ones. The columns are wide enough for base ten (dienes) but also benefit from integrated ten frames which help with subitising when using manipulatives such as place value counters.
Ages 7 to 9 – Whole Numbers (Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones) and decimals (tenths and hundredths) with a wide range of column headings so it can be used not only to support place value, but also conversions of measure, money and fraction/decimal equivalents. Unlike printable charts which are limited to A4 or A3 sizes, our place value mats are long enough to include all the required place values required as part of the Year 3 and 4 National Curriculum in England whilst the columns are still wide enough to fit base ten (dienes). This is beneficial for children who still need visual representations to see the size comparison of numbers, which is not possible with place value counters.
Ages 9+ – Whole Numbers (Millions, Hundred Thousands, Ten Thousands, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones) with decimals (tenths, hundredths and thousandths). It has conversions of measure and money but also the added benefit of equivalent fractions AND PERCENTAGES. This plavalmat® is suitable for use in upper Key Stage Two (Junior Years 5 and 6) and Lower Key Stage 3 (Secondary Years 7-9).

Our plavalmat® place value mats have a durable, flexible and hard wearing surface. They can be kept hygienic by wiping with a damp, non-abrasive cloth with mild detergent and then dried immediately.
Do not submerge them in water. They are not suitable for washing in sinks, dishwashers or washing machines.
To avoid creasing, we recommend that our plavalmat® place value mats are not folded, but either kept flat or rolled with the print side facing outwards. In order to keep the printed surface looking its best for longer, store in a cool, dark place such as inside the rigid cardboard tube that it comes in.
They are designed mainly for use with concrete resources but can be written on with chalk which can be dry-wiped off. They are not suitable to be written on with pen or pencils as these will leave permanent marks (if you wish to use dry-wipe marker pens, simply place an sheet of acetate on top of the mat).
A plavalmat® cannot be ripped or torn, but they can be cut. Do not put sharp or heavy objects on top as this can cause damage to the surface.
